Christmas At Pemberley Manor

img_2395-1I’m a sucker for Hallmark movies. Come this time of year when the Christmas movies come out, I’m definitely all for it. If you have gotten to know me, you know how I love Jane Austen and all things Pride and Prejudice.

Not only is there one with the theme of Pride and Prejudice, but there is two this year for movies. The first new movie to kick off the Christmas movies was Christmas at Pemberley Manor. I couldn’t watch it live, so I made sure to record it for later.

Sunday, I got all comfy ready to watch my favorite fictional couple find their way to each other. I’ll admit it, I was excited to know who would play George Wickham’s character. There is just something about Wickham. You know you shouldn’t love the bad boy. But, you can’t help it. Of course, you know in the end you won’t love him. But, it doesn’t matter how many times I read the book or have seen the different movie versions. I have a soft spot for Wickham until he turns into a complete jerk.

Back to the movie. I want to give this a positive review, but I can’t. The only way I can give it a positive review is if it had nothing to do with Pride and Prejudice.

The only thing that it had to do with Pride and Prejudice? Character names and the name of the manor. But, the manor? It was more like a house, not a mansion.

Darcy is my favorite all-time male character. The guy I would love to have if he were real. I didn’t fall for this Darcy. I can fall for the one in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies. But, this one? Not even close. I even liked the Darcy from the other Hallmark movie, Unleashing Mr. Darcy. The Darcy in this movie? He was just a typical business guy. No one special. He was nice from the beginning. We need some tension coming from Darcy. He and Elizabeth are to get off on the wrong start. I didn’t even feel that from the beginning.

Elizabeth is also to have some judgment in her. She was way too nice.

Caroline, Elizabeth’s boss? She started off nice, and she did turn a little mean in the movie. But, she turns around and is nice again. That’s not the Caroline we know and love to hate.

George? George was way too friendly to be Wickham. Unless he’s not supposed to be based off Wickham. Which I might be able to see the more I think about it. Because this George had no hatred towards Darcy. And his feelings towards Elizabeth seemed real.

Now I worry about the next movie based on Pride and Prejudice. I’m hoping it will be better because that one is actually based off a book that was released, I believe last year? I read that book and liked it. It had a reverse role where it made Darcy, female. So fingers crossed on that one. I can’t remember when it airs. So, keep your eye out for that post.

I hope I didn’t discourage you from seeing this movie. If you are a Hallmark movie fan, I think you might still like it. If you are a Pride and Prejudice fan? I would love for you to see it. Would love to discuss this with you. I would be curious to see if there are any Jane Austen fans who liked this.

Pride and Prejudice and Mistletoe

thumbnailIt’s a little late, but I just finished Pride and Prejudice and Mistletoe by Melissa De La Cruz. I really enjoyed this one. At first I wasn’t sure because it started off a little weird, or unusual. I’ve read my share of takes on Pride and Prejudice. Some good and some not so good.

We meet Darcy Fitzwilliam. A woman on a mission. She’s woman, hear her roar. So just by the name, you can tell what role she will play. The version of Elizabeth Bennet? That would be Luke Bennet. I think that’s that what threw me off at first. But, hey. I’m going to stick through it and keep reading.

After a couple chapters it reminded me of a Hallmark movie. In fact, I wouldn’t mind seeing this story on screen.

Darcy comes back to Pemberley, Ohio. It’s been eight years since she’s been back. Despite, her father’s wishes. She moved to New York where she became a success. Coming back to Ohio, she catches up with her best friend Bingley. His love interest? Jim Bennet.

There are Pride and Prejudice plots in the story with more of a modern twist. You have the George Wickham type character, Carl. There is the Collins character. I did find it funny that it was a female version, and the first name was Charlotte.  Instead of sisters for Bennet, there are brothers. Interesting take, which I won’t go into so you don’t get spoiled. Darcy does have her siblings, but that was a little different from the sibling we are used to seeing, aka Georgiana. I don’t want to get into that also due to spoilers.

I gave it four stars. If you are a Hallmark movie fan. You’ll love this. If you are a Jane Austen fan? Maybe, maybe not. It’s hard to say. You have your die hard fans who I could see not caring for it.  Otherwise, I think you should check it out.

Why Can’t I Live in a Jane Austen Novel?

Is there ever going to be a day where I’ll want to stop living in a fictional world? There are many worlds I would love to live in. Who wouldn’t want to live in Narnia or attend Hogwarts?

If there is a world I would love to live in, it would be a Jane Austen novel. I would love it if I could find my own Mr. Darcy. Why him? I ask myself that question many times. Why go for the jerk? Well, he was a jerk at the beginning. His pride taking over. But, who doesn’t have pride? Everyone is guilty of it at some point. If it’s not Darcy, it’s Captain Wentworth. Reunited love, another favorite of mine.

I always love when people remind me that women were not equals or the fact there were germs everywhere. Yes, I do think about that. I would miss my shower, baths, you name it. But, if I was born in that time I’m sure I would be fine. Right? Hopefully.

I’m sure I’m not alone in this. At least I hope so. But escaping the real world for the fictional world is a great way to escape expectations one faces. Not caring what people might think. I can be who I want to be. Maybe I want to see things through the main character or maybe just be a character on the side lines.

Now I’m thinking I should escape the real world tonight before the work week. Maybe escape into the world of War and Peace.
